How to acheive accurate White Balance everytime

Hi all and welcome to another Darktable tutorial

As we all know that good image is a combination of many factors like perfect exposure, perfect color, perfect white balance, low noise etc.Modern cameras in most of the time gives us correct white balance if not perfect but produces near accurate images.Shooting in RAW format is very useful as it contains larger data than JPEG images and White Balance can be easily adjusted in post processing. But the problem arises when the image is shot in jpeg with wrong white balance and correcting them in post in difficult.Correcting white balance is very important and I recommend it is the first step in the editing so that color toning in the final part of post will not go horrible. In this tutorial, we will learn how to achieve accurate white balance every time.

Wrong White Balance
 Before correcting white balance
Correct White Balance
 After correcting white balance

As I said in my previous post that table is capable of performing most of the work of Adobe Lightroom. But when you look at the white balance adjustment tab, we don't have the important tool of white balance adjustment, eyedropper. Eyedropper tool is very efficient and it makes the life simpler by simply clicking the neutral spot in the image like white color or grey color, but that important tool is not present in darktable. Don’t get worried we can achieve the same result with a few more additional steps but the result is accurate.

As you all know white color is the combination of RGB 255,255,255.If the RGB values are not same, then it indicates that white balance is off and corresponding colors need to be adjusted in the white balance option.Let me explain in detail using visual presentation for better understanding.

Step 1: Importing our image into the Lighttable

Step 2: Load our image into the Darkroom

Step 3: Click the COLOR PICKER option which is available to the left and click to expand the options. Two options are available. Taking point sample and area sample. I usually prefer to use area sample.

Step 4: Next to the area, eyedropper is available which is used to draw box in the image for making selection. Look for the white color in the image.I choose the white wall beyond the sofa and dragged a box near the lamp shade.

Step 5: Very important step is to click ADD button below the color sample preview to load the RGB values of the sample taken.Otherwise any correction will not be reflected in the values. The goal is to bring R=G=B values to make it neutral.

Step 6: Once the above steps are completed, now its time to correct the white balance. Go to the third tab where we find the white balance tool. Click it to expand for more options.

Step 7: As I mentioned above, the goal is to bring RGB values to equal number. From the sample color taken, we can find that R = 253 G = 229 B = 208. We need to bring G and B values to R value i.e 253 which can be done in white balance tool. Move to green slider back and forth to achieve the desired outcome. In my case, I need to increase value to make it 253. After adjusting, the corresponding values of the sample taken changes which can be seen in the left side.

Step 8: Next step is to adjust Blue values to make it 253 .I need to move the slider forward to make the value to match R and G values. After adjusting, the corresponding values of the sample taken changes which can be seen in the left side.

Step 9: After adjusting the slider back and forth, final outcome is achieved which represents correct white balance. Using the same technique, color cast in the images can be removed more precisely. This method involves little extra steps but they are accurate and we were able to understand core concepts on how eyedropper tool in other softwares work.

Hope you the understand the tutorial and comment your opinion and feedback. Meet you all in the next tutorial.

An Introduction to Darktable : The Ultimate image editing software

Hi everyone!!!
Welcome to my another blog post.In my previous post I listed my favorite free softwares that are worth trying in 2019. You can read the post here. After using Darktable for more than a year, I realized how powerful it can be when combined with few techniques to achieve mind-blowing results.Since there are lack of tutorials in the internet, I planned to share my knowledge and experience through this blog in simple way as possible through series of small articles with detailed pictorial representation. Lets begin our new journey into the world of image-editing.

A small Intro.....

It is a non-destructive RAW editor, very powerful enough to perform most of the work Adobe Lightroom is capable of performing. Modules tab are divided neatly for specific adjustments. All the modules are customizable for our specific liking. The initial layout maybe little confusing but the software can be very addictive.
My favorite modules are Equalizer Module - where we can de-noise the image, smoothen the skin etc, Retouch module - a specific module for skin retouching like blemish removal  and Zone System - where image is divided into zones based on luminance value for better fine tuning.
As I said before, it is even powerful to perform some of the process that are commonly done in Adobe Photoshop like Portrait retouching such as Frequency Separation for blemish and scar removal, Skin smoothening, Dodging and Burning, Color Toning, Layer Adjustments through blending options etc. It is a must try software for growing photographers.

 Home Page Layout

This entire post is structured to get used to the layout and settings of the software. After installing the software and loading it, the initial startup look like this. This is the place where we load our images and export out final results. In the left side, we can see import option where we load specific images or we can import the entire folder to the software. After loading the images, the thumbnail of it will displayed in the middle portion and preview size of the thumbnail can be adjusted by scrolling the mouse wheel. It can also load HDR Image formats like OpenEXR etc.

In the right side, we can see the select option where we can create HDR using bracketed images, group the similar images for reference etc.

Export option is also available in the right side where can export our final finished image and various file formats are available. We can also set the quality, max size min size etc.

Darkroom Module

Darkroom Module can be activated either by clicking the darkroom option at the top or by pressing D which is a shortcut for it.Darkroom Module is further sub-divided into various tabs with relevant options for specific adjustments. The third tab in Darkroom Module is the Basic adjustments tab where we can find options for initial image corrections like
  • Contrast Brightness Saturation - for adjusting contrast and saturation of the image
  • Shadows and Highlights - for recovering highlights and shadows from the image for                                                increasing the dynamic range of the image
  • Crop and Rotate - for cropping and adjusting vertical and horizontal keystones
  • Orientation - for rotating the images
  • Exposure - for adjusting exposure of the image
  • White balance - for correcting color cast issues and correcting white balance.

The next tab basically deals with options relating to Luminosity adjustments alone like

  • Fill Light - where exposure compensation can be increased or decreased based on specific luminance value in the particular image
  • Levels - where luminance value of the image is represented in graph similar to histogram and shadows, mid-tones and highlights can be adjusted
  • Tone Curve - where image luminance value is represented in graph and more refined adjustments can be made to shadows, mid-tones and highlights
  • Zone System - invented by Ansel Adams where image luminance value is divided into zones and targeted adjustment can be made to particular zones alone with affecting the other zone values which is very useful in creating HDR  images.
  • Local Contrast - where contrast of the image is adjusted without affecting its saturation.

This tab is dedicated to adjusting chroma values ( Color values) of the image like
  • Channel Mixer - where Red Green Blue values of each color channel are adjusted to achieve specific color effects
  • Color Correction - which is very useful for removing color cast in the image. Tutorial coming soon
  • Monochrome - converts your image into Black and White. If combined with masking, specific color desaturation can be made to create dramatic effect.
  • Color Zone - where colors of the image are divided into zones and each color zone's Hue, Saturation and Brightness Value can be adjusted for precise actions.
  • Color Balance - where colors can be added to shadows , mid-tones and highlights individually which is a great tool for color grading our images
  • Vibrance - it increases saturation value to all colors except Red and Orange which basically is a skin tone
  • Velvia - just opposite of Vibrance where saturation value is added only to Red and Orange colors

This tools in this tab basically deals with lens adjustments like:
  • Perspective correction - to straighten the distorted images
  • Lens Correction - tons of lens profiles are included which makes the task of lens correction very simple
  • Chromatic aberrations - to remove magenta and green edges in the contrasty areas
  • Equalizer - a powerful tool which I use for skin retouching and noise removal
  • Spot Removal - to remove dust in the sensor

This final tab consists of tools like:
  • Split Toning - where colors can be added to shadows and highlights for color grading
  • Vignetting - where vintage dark borders around the image can be created
  • Soften - to create glowing bloom effect
  • Graduated Density - similar to Graduated ND filters but in digital form.

And the tools does not end there. Those were my frequently used tools and not to forget each and every tool and layout is customizable. If we look at the bottom, we can see more modules where additional tools can be either added or unwanted tools can be removed to make our work-space neat and clean.

Now coming to the first tab, it shows all those tools applied to the image. Pressing the power icon will toggle the adjustment on and off. The second option is used to save presets for each tools. The Third option is to reset the tool to default values.

The Second tab indicated by Star Icon is for marking tools to our favorite list. All the favorite tools will be indicated in the tab as list which makes our work simpler as we don't need to search for tools in every module.

To the left of the screen, few addintional tools are there and my favorite is Color picker which helps in getting accurate white balance which I will make a separete tutorial.

History shows the list of actions applied to the image and undo can be done here in case if we want to go back to any particular step in the post processing. Snapshot helps in creating before and after snapshot for comparison.

Hope you like this Intro Post and meet you all in the next tutorial. Thanks

My Favorite free photo editing softwares worth trying in 2019

Yes, I know great things don't come free of cost as Joker rightly said in The Dark Knight. But there are generous minded people on earth who made great softwares and distributed them as free. After my intense research, today I am sharing some of the greatest free softwares that are worth trying in 2019 to make our Facebook and Instagram post to sparkle.

For Mac/PC

Darktable

My first in the list is Darktable which is a non-destructive RAW editor, very powerful enough to perform most of the work Adobe Lightroom is capable of performing. I have been using it for more than a year and it is my favorite RAW editing software.

The disadvantage is lack of training tutorials in YouTube. It is a must try software for growing photographers.

Rawtherapee

Rawtherapee is also a non-destructive RAW editor which perform similar to Darktable with the major difference of making option which is not present in Rawtherapee. HSV Curve , HDR and Wavelet settings are remarkable in Rawtherapee. Custom Luts and other Popular luts can be applied to image using Film Simulation module which is one of the best option for simplified and quick color grading.

ON1 Effects 10.5

This software is great for adding effects and finishing touches to your images. It has many inbuilt presets like vintage effects, cinematic looks, urban effects, HDR effects, Matte Effect etc which itself completes our majority of work. Each effects are customisable to our own liking and masking can be done for precise selection.
Adjustment Brush Option is very useful for targeted adjustment through painting the desired area of the image. Noise Reduction is very usable in this software. Dynamic Contrast add dramatic look to the image.Color Enhancer can be used to fix overexposed sky. Portrait Enhancer smoothens the skin and remove blemishes and wrinkles and list goes on. It is a definite software to try out.

For HDR/Tonemappiung

Enfusegui

Its layout is simple but this software is very powerful to blend various bracketed exposure into simple large data image file which can be developed in any of the above mentioned softwares to increase the dynamic range of the image by adjusting the Shadows and Highlights.

To Download from their Official Website: Click Here

Luminance HDR

It does the similar job - combine multiple exposure images into single image for increasing the dynamic range of the final output. It has wide input and output file option. Beyond that, it has some inbuilt tools for adjustments with built-in presets which works most of the times. But my preferred workflow is to blend exposure in this software and use that image in any of the above mentioned softwares for adjustments for better control as inbuilt tools of this software is limited.

For Mobile

Here is my favorite apps that I use in mobile:

✦Snapseed
✦RNI Films - for vintage film look ( ios)
✦Foodie - filters with food names (ios)
✦Darkr - for Black & White images with real simulation of traditional darkroom technique.

Personal review of Mapla Restaurant : A must visit place for Briyani Lovers

My cravings for briyani never ended. And this made me to visit one of the popular restaurants in Chennai, Mapla which is located in sterling road, Nungambakkam. In Sundays place is  little crowded so prior reservation is recommended  for weekend get-togethers. As far as the interiors are concerned there is not much fancy stuffs and dully lit ambient light which make us feel like we are  having virundhu at home. Services are very quick and  hospitality is good.

Briyani Virundhu

The dishes are limited to Kerala and chettinad style and we may not get Chinese and other continental foods. I have ordered mutton briyani virudhu which includes unlimited briyani, mutton fry Baroda, mutton gravy, onion Raita, brinjal gravy. There is also a chicken based briyani virundhu with the difference in chicken briyani and chicken fry , Kerala style Thalaserry briyani which is a layered style basmati briyani and veg briyani. Apart from briyani,Non veg thali is also very popular which includes chicken, mutton and fish gravis, aviyal and poriyal.

Non-veg Thali

The taste of the mutton briyani is Madurai style made with Seeragasamba rice which is excellent as we can feel that we are having briyani in Madurai itself. Chicken briyani is Ambur style based which is a Dum briyani made with Basmati rice.
Fish fry

Chilli chicken

Then we ordered vanjaram fry and  Andhra style  chilli chicken which to my opinion should have been fried little more  as I was able to feel rawness of the chicken.
To finish it off we ordered for Falooda and Jigardunda, very much same taste we can get in Madurai My expectations never failed and we are happy with the taste and and services. It is a must place  in Chennai for biryani lovers to try.

My personal ratings : ★★★

Singapore Travel Guide : My Memories in Megapixel

Merlion Statue, Singapore

When I see it first I thought the flight as accidentally landed in a five star hotel but no it was Changi airport. It has been ranked as the number one airport for six years. The entire airport has been fully carpeted and we can feel the excellent aroma throughout the airport.Very warming hospitality by the officials and citizen. To describe more about Changi airport it might take another post as there were so many things to talk.

Orchard Road

The roads are very clean and very greenish and the traffic is very organised and people are driving safely and carefully.

I stayed in hotel Park Royal in Little India. The services are excellent and lobby is very busy with crowded guests. Behind the hotel Mustafa shopping mall is located where we can get a to z.Its a 24 hours shopping mall and we went out for shopping there in midnight.Yes, roaming around the streets and shopping during the midnight is very safe in Singapore. Surrounding the mall, there are many Indian restaurants especially tamil restaurants which made us feel like we were in home.

There is a boat ride approximately 30 minute or travel we can see the skyscrapers of Singapore. The History of Singapore is told to us during the boat ride. There are many restaurants and cafe which were very popular for evening get-together.

As we traveled further we reached Merlion ,the symbol of Singapore, a very famous statue. Travel to Singapore will not complete without taking a photo in front of the Merlion. There is also a fountain show which is so lovely to watch.

Then we reached Marina Bay Sands hotel 56th floor which is the tallest building in Singapore where we can see the entire city from the rooftop. It is usually very crowded and it is one of the key attractions in Singapore and we were lucky enough to have sunset view from there. Merlion and fountain show can be viewed from the rooftop.
Garden by the Bay, a very big garden with the wonderful lighting is located very near to Marina Bay Sands. There is a place where they created the rain forests inside the garden which is so cold and there is a waterfall in the centre of rainforests.

The another important attraction in Singapore is The Flyer, which is a big ferris wheel with the big air-conditioned capsules moving slowly with the approximate duration of 30 minutes to see the entire city from it. We can see the beautiful roads, financial district, skyscrapers etc. The capsule is very comfortable and it is fully air-conditioned.The place where it is located is very greenish.

Another major attraction in Singapore is Sentosa island. There are many attractions inside Sentosa Island like universal studios Madame Tussaud museum,Luge Ride tc. The best way to travel to Sentosa Island is by cable car which is a big capsule which can easily accommodate 6 people and from the cable car we can see the harbor, ships and other attractions. Unlike Singapore city, Sentosa Island is filled with greenish trees and fun filled entertainment attractions.

In Madame Tussaud’s museum we can see very realistic wax statues of famous world leaders politicians celebrities sports people.

As the sun goes down there is a very beautiful laser light show in the sea shore which describes the history of Singapore. Description about the show cannot be written in words or shown as pictures but I try to post a video which I took during the show.

As we move further we reach see aquarium which is one of the largest aquarium in the world located adjacent to marine water in order to facilitate the marine creatures. There we can see lots of underwater creatures loading dolphin. My favourite part is the tunnel inside the sea aquarium where we can see sharks and other underwater creatures swimming over our head.

In China Town, there is a Buddha Temple where prayers are made by the devotees and the temple is very silent and it is good for doing meditation as well. Visiting the temple inside brings us peace inside.

In China town, we can feel the Chinese culture in the form of food, artwork etc.

Trip ends but the memories still there and it will be forever.
